Bounding Home is for sale following 26 years of informed and generous care by her current owners. She has been lavished with incredible maintenance and upgrades by a world class boatyard and her condition is complemented by her beauty and sailing ability.

From the drawing board of John G. Alden, the Caravelle is Alden Design No 992. Bounding Home is Hull #1 of the 18 boats built to the design: the hull was laid up in England by Halmatic in 1963 and shipped to Denmark for fitting out by Molich. She was delivered in 1964 for the Commodore of the Cruising Club of America.

She is a well balanced classic yacht: the convenience of a fiberglass hull with the traditional look of a wood house, combined with day sailing simplicity or cruising comforts. The list of improvements is substantial and indicates the serious attention that has been paid to Bounding Home.

Descriptions

History and Design

"John G. Alden began his design career as an apprentice with B. B. Crowninshield in 1902 and became a productive designer and experienced sailor by the time he departed to start his own Boston design office in 1909. His initial success was modest until he won his first Bermuda Race with Malabar IV in 1923. Alden’s subsequent Bermuda Race victories in 1926 with Malabar VII and Malabar X in 1932 provided his firm enduring fame and success."

Design #992, The Alden Caravelle, was first built in 1963 with hull #1 (Excaliber, now Bounding Home) being delivered in 1964. 

She completed four Newport to Bermuda Races (Seller will convey a Rosenfeld photo of the start of the 1966 race and an original Alden sales brochure and line drawings with the sale).

The fiberglass hull was molded by Halmatic Ltd in London to Lloyds specifications and the deck, house and interior was finished by Paul Molich in Denmark.

Exterior / Deck

The black topsides, gold cove stripe and white boot stripe are eye catching. The exquisitely varnished teak house sides, cockpit coaming and toe rail complete the picture of Bounding Home. She is frequently the prettiest boat in the harbor.

Bow pulpit forward provides protection for the Harken headstay furler and the 45 pound stainless steel Ultra anchor (NEW 2019) on a dedicated bow roller. There is 100' of 1/4" stainless chain and 200' of 8-plait rode. There is also a deck wash at the bow.

Open bow chocks provide a fare lead to the wooden bow cleats.

In front of the windlass are pad eyes that provide inner forestay connection point and staysail tack point. These pad eyes are secured through the anchor locker to the stem for proper strength.

Just aft, on centerline, is a dorade box and cowl vent to provide ventilation to the anchor locker.

The varnished house sides have a non-opening deadlight on the forward face, there are 4 bronze opening portlights, and four larger non-opening deadlights. There are two opening overhead hatches - one over the v-berth and one in the saloon.

Two dorade / cowl vents sit beside the mast providing ventilation to the main saloon. There is a removable charlie nobel vent for the solid fuel fireplace to port.

Custom varnished teak chocks hold the boathook, while the Dyer 8' rowing dinghy (with paint job to match Bounding Home) sits in its own varnished chocks on the coach house.

The side decks are fiberglass with molded non-skid and are wide and uncluttered with chainplates a few inches inside of the toe rails.

The dodger protects the companionway which is slightly offset to starboard.

The cockpit is a mix of molded fiberglass and varnished seats which cover port and starboard cockpit lazarettes. The pedestal, wheel, compass, cockpit table and drinks holder make the cockpit a relaxing space at anchor or on a day sail and an ergonomic work space during sailing maneuvers.

Behind the helm seat is the Harken mainsheet traveler, propane locker, and additional lazarette lockers.

The Navtec hydraulic backstay is integrated into the stern pushpit. 

Aft chocks sit on the taff rail and provide directional leads to wood stern cleats.

Rigging and Sails

The rig and standing rigging was updated in 2009 with a new aluminum mast, new boom, new standing rigging (wire), new running rigging and new removable inner forestay.

The mainsheet is the only line that is lead back to the cockpit on the port side of the coach house (next to the companionway).

Slab reefing is handled at the mast. There is a removable vang which doubles as a preventer.

Interior Accommodations

Bounding Home's interior is a standard arrangement for the era she was built. She provides comfortable social spaces, berths, head with shower and a functional galley.

She is elegantly simple.

At the base of the companionway, we find DC electrical distrbution with battery switch and breakers. There is no AC electrical aboard Bounding Home. Underneath the companionway steps is the engine.

To starboard is the nav station which includes significant storage for charts, companionway drop boards and gear. The up to date electronics are mounted elegantly and purposefully. The ice box doubles as the nav dask with dual top opening doors.

To port is the galley with sink, (pressure hot and cold water and foot pump), dedicated flatware storage, pantry storage, drawers and deep lockers. There is a gimbaled four-burner Broadwater propane stove outboard (NEW 1999). All formica countertops were replaced in 2012.

Forward of the stove there is a bar countertop. Fitted glass and bottle storage outboard.

The main saloon is a traditional layout with bench settees, outboard pilot berths and a permanent drop leaf table on center. There is drawer storage under the berths and settees and lockers outboard.

Overheads were replaced with Phenolic bead board.

A tile-faced, stainless steel Paul Luke solid-fuel stove sits forward to port on the main bulkhead. There is additional storage in lockers to port and a large hanging locker to starboard. A giclee yacht portrait of Bounding Home is on the main bulkhead (the portrait conveys with the sale).

Forward to port is the head compartment with manual toilet (NEW 2018), vanity sink and hot / cold shower which drains to a sump under the teak grate with Rule gray water sump (NEW 2023).

Forward is the proper v-berth with drawers under, lockers outboard, bookshelves, 12 volt fans, 2 opening portlights and an opening overhead hatch. Anchor locker access is in the forepeak protected by curtains.
