Description

Eurydice is a heavy displacement mono hull. The auxiliary sailing vessel has a somewhat plumb spoon bow entrance complete with a bowsprit. The topside freeboard is of moderate height and shows

• a lightly sweeping sheer line set off with four opening rectangular portlights to either side. Topsides show a white painted finish. The hull has an adequate beam, making for a stable platform. The stern is double-ended and fitted with an outside hanging rudder controlled by a tiller. The underwater profile shows a spoon bow entrance extending down to a full keel of moderate draft. The forefoot is somewhat cutaway. Bilge sections are full and round. The vessel is constructed using Ferrolite/fiberglass.

The ferrite-constructed hull has been completely decked over. The deck's perimeter is surrounded by stainless steel ("SS*) stanchioned double rope lifelines. Wood chock toe rails are fitted fore and aft. The bow stem is fitted with a bowsprit complete with chain, whisker stays, bobstay, and netting. Bronze chocks and a large Sampson post are fitted. The anchor windlass has been removed. A large foredeck escape and ventilation hatch constructed out of wood and Plexiglas is placed inline. The side decks are clear. The vessel's skiff can be mounted on an amidship deck, leaving an after-trunk cabin with a lift-up fold-down companionway hatch. A flush cockpit is placed to the stern and protected by oak comings. It is here the vessel is controlled by a large wooden tiller. A lazarette hatch is fitted to the stern. The vessel is rigged as a lugsail schooner. Auxiliary power - added at a later date - is provided by an inline diesel engine spinning an offset drive shaft.

Accommodations

Accommodations are laid out as follows. Behind the bow chain locker is a workshop with a double workbench and storage lockers. The overhead hatch provides natural ventilation and light. The galley is placed forward to starboard and set up on a wood teak counter equipped with S sinks, cupboards, and a tiled back. A gimbaled stove is fitted and a double-door pantry is mounted. Across the way is an enclosed alcove, nav station, and dinette table with seating for four. Raised

alcove bunk berths are placed port and starboard (*P/S") amidship with storage under. A marine sanitation device in an open placement is fitted port mid-aft. Machinery is tucked in under the companionway step box. The engine is readily accessed by a removable wood stepladder. A master bunk is placed to stern and is large-sized and transverse mounted. The interior is trimmed out with teak and holly solid wood sole, teak and/or mahogany wood siding, and cabinetry and tile laid galley.

Type of Construction

The vessel's keel was laid in the mid-1970s in Alviso, CA, an area at that time known for its boat-building community. The hull is constructed entirely out of Ferrolite fiberglass-reinforced plastics

• to ferrous cement construction style boat building technique. A scaffolding was first erected according to the plans. Frame stations were lofted into place and constructed out of fir or similar wood and erected to the scaffolding. A number of battens were placed and noshed in between the bilge, sheer, and garboards. The structure framework was then made utilizing steel rods for bow pipe, sternpost, and keel. What appears to be at least eight layers of wire mesh were then formed and fitted over this framework. Four layers of vertical wire mesh were laid vertically, one by one, overlapping and interlacing with the keel form. Al layers of wire mesh were tied together. Plywood bulkheads were then fitted in place and connected to vertical rods and wire mesh. Additional layers of wire mesh were formed on the outside and interlaced and connected to the inside mesh. The wire form was then plastered utilizing a mixture of polyester resin and Nicro

fiber filler, creating the Ferrolite skin. After plastering and curing, the structure was then fiberglass sheathed utilizing polyester resin and painted. The structure was then turned over, internal ballast was added to its keel envelope, and decked over. Decking consists of laminated fir carlin and cross beams fitted with a plywood sub-decking and Ferrolite sheathing on the exterior.

STEERING ASSEMBLY

The vessel is controlled by a laminated oak tiller from the cockpit area to the stern. The tiller activates

a full wood fiberglass sheathed outside hanging rudder assembly supported by three steel pintles and gudgeons placed on the stern.

Galley

GALLEYGEAR

A stand-up galey counter si located starboard amidship. This teak wood counter isfitted with shallow double S sinks with foot activated faucet. Behind the galley si completely tiled. A shelf and lockers are fitted. A gimbaled Magic Chef 4-burner stove/oven is mounted. The stove is fueled by propane. A single Manchester steel 6-gallon propane tank is located on deck, controlled by its own shutoff valve. A stand-up AC refrigerator by GE is placed across the way. A large double-door wood pantry is mounted.

Electrical System

The vessel is fitted with a simplified DC electrical system comprised of (a) Eveready Group 27 battery utilized for engine start and (b) Nautilus Gold deep cycle Group27 battery utilized for house system. Both batteries are controlled by a Perko master battery disconnect switch. Batteries are charged via a Schumacher 6/2-amp AC electric battery charger, or via the engine-driven alternator, 55-amp 12-volt negative ground. DC electrical wiring is then routed to a pair of Sea Dog distribution panels equipped with nine illuminated labeled switches controlling anchor light, navigation light, cabin lights, bilge pumps, and accessories. A battery indicator meter is mounted, as well as a 12-volt plug-in connection. Al wiring is of double insulated tin strand with crimped terminal ends.

Spars and Rigging

The vessel is rigged as a balanced lugsail schooner. The lugsail was originally developed in China and has been adapted for modern use. The spars are constructed out of tapered 5" diameter hollow aluminum poles mounted through the deck and fitted onto the keelson below. The foremast head is set up with a VHF antenna and a Furuno radar antenna. The main masthead is set

up with a VHF antenna and anchor/steaming light. The booms and gaffs are 4" and 3" diameter tapered fir. A wood bowsprit is mounted on the bow stem, connected by a chain, whisker, and bobstays. Masts are painted green.

Comments: Spars set up and operational.

Masts ni need of refinishing.

STANDING RIGGING

Al standing rigging is standardized 1⁄2" 7" x 7" wire with Nicro pressed spliced terminals going to 1⁄2 bronze turnbuckles and outside galvanized chainplates through bolted-to hull. A headstay, double forward shrouds, triadic stay, and a set of double main shrouds are fitted. Shrouds are set up with wood ratlings and are equipped with 28 belay pins mounted on boards.

Comments: Standing rigging set up and operational. Rigging in need of tuning before serious offshore sailing is attempted.
